Winstrol Master Guide
Winstrol (stanozolol) is a 17-alpha-alkylated oral and injectable anabolic steroid known for hardening muscles and producing a dry, vascular look. Run 20-50 mg/day orally or 50-100 mg every other day injectable for 6-8 weeks. Aromatization is zero – no estrogen conversion – so no AI needed. The trade-off is severe joint dryness, harsh lipid impact, and elevated liver enzymes on the oral version. The cutting steroid – never run for bulking, never as a base.
What is Winstrol?
Winstrol is the brand name for stanozolol, a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Synthesized by Sterling Drug in 1959 as Winstrol-V for veterinary use and Winstrol for human medicine, the compound was originally approved for hereditary angioedema and severe muscle wasting. Its anabolic:androgenic ratio of approximately 320:30 means it builds muscle with minimal androgenic burden – the opposite extreme from testosterone.
How does Winstrol work?
Three pharmacological characteristics define stanozolol:
- SHBG binding: stanozolol binds and lowers sex hormone-binding globulin, increasing free testosterone in the bloodstream when stacked with test
- No aromatization: the structure cannot convert to estrogen – zero water retention, zero gyno risk
- Strong androgen receptor binding: hardens muscle bellies and produces the trademark “dry” look
The lack of aromatization is what makes Winstrol the cutting steroid. Users keep all the gains lean and look harder than they actually are because there’s no subcutaneous water masking the muscle.

What dose should you run?
Standard cutting protocols:
- Oral Winstrol: 20-50 mg/day for 6-8 weeks max
- Injectable Winstrol: 50-100 mg every other day for 6-8 weeks
- Pre-contest protocol: 50-100 mg/day final 4-6 weeks (advanced only)
Both oral and injectable Winstrol are 17-alpha-alkylated – the alkylation makes the oral survive first-pass liver metabolism, but the injectable suspension is still alkylated for the same reason. Both forms stress the liver. Most users prefer 30-50 mg oral split AM/PM for cleaner blood levels.
How long is a Winstrol cycle?
Strict limits:
- 6-8 weeks maximum – past 8 weeks liver enzymes spike sharply
- Run with testosterone base 300-500 mg/week (mandatory)
- Liver support throughout – TUDCA 500-1000 mg/day, NAC 1200 mg/day
- Joint support throughout – fish oil, collagen, glucosamine
Never run Winstrol alone. Stanozolol crushes natural testosterone production but provides zero androgen baseline to replace it. Without testosterone underneath, you crash hard – low libido, mood collapse, joint pain becomes unbearable.

What gains should you expect?
Realistic outcomes over 6-8 weeks at 30-50 mg/day:
- 2-5 lb lean muscle (most of it visible because no water)
- Visible fat loss, especially abdominal
- Pronounced muscle hardening and vascularity
- Strength gains (20-40 lb on major lifts)
- “Dry” cutting look
Winstrol does not build mass – it sculpts it. Users running Winstrol for bulking are misusing the compound. The strength is in body composition refinement during a cutting cycle, where the visible aesthetic gains outpace what the scale shows.
What about the joint pain?
This is the defining Winstrol side effect:
- Dries up synovial fluid in major joints (shoulders, elbows, knees)
- Onset typically week 2-3 of cycle
- Worst in heavy lifters who train through it
- Lasts through the cycle and into PCT
The joint dryness is non-negotiable – it’s a direct effect of stanozolol’s action on connective tissue. Fish oil 4-6 g/day, collagen 20 g/day, and glucosamine help but don’t eliminate it. Powerlifters and heavy strength athletes often avoid Winstrol entirely for this reason. Bodybuilders accept the pain for the cosmetic benefit.
What are the side effects?
Beyond joint pain, at 30-50 mg/day:
- HDL cholesterol crash (often 50-70% drop)
- LDL spike
- ALT/AST elevation (oral worse than injectable, but both)
- Acne and oily skin
- Hair shedding in genetically predisposed users
- Mood elevation (sometimes aggression)
- Suppressed natural testosterone production
The lipid impact is the cycle-stopper for many. Winstrol’s HDL crash is among the most severe in the steroid class. Annual or twice-yearly Winstrol use is sustainable; running it 6 months out of 12 is cardiovascular risk territory.
What bloodwork should you run?
Before, mid-cycle, and 6 weeks post-PCT:
- Total + free testosterone
- LH and FSH
- Estradiol
- SHBG (drops sharply on Winstrol)
- Full lipid panel (the critical one)
- ALT/AST liver enzymes
- CBC including hematocrit
- Resting blood pressure twice daily
Mid-cycle bloodwork at week 3-4 catches lipid disasters before they progress. If HDL drops below 25 mg/dL or LDL exceeds 160 mg/dL, end the Winstrol portion immediately and continue with testosterone only.
How does Winstrol stack with other compounds?
Common Winstrol stacks:
- Test + Winstrol cutting: 300-500 mg test, 30-50 mg Winstrol for 6-8 weeks – the classic cutting cycle
- Test + Anavar + Winstrol pre-contest: stack hardener with hardener for ultimate dry look
- Test + Tren + Winstrol: advanced cutting stack, harsh on lipids and joints
- Winstrol + Primobolan: hardening with mass preservation – smoother profile
Our Anavar Master Guide covers the closest oral alternative. Anavar is gentler on joints and lipids but produces slightly less hardening per mg.
What PCT do you need?
Standard PCT applies:
- Nolvadex: 40/40/20/20 mg/day for 4 weeks
- Clomid: 50/50/25/25 mg/day for 4 weeks alternative
- HCG bridge: 500 IU 2x/week for 2 weeks before SERM PCT
- Bloodwork at week 6 post-PCT: total T, free T, LH, FSH, E2, full lipids
Recovery from a clean 6-8 week Winstrol+test cycle is typically 8-12 weeks with proper PCT. Lipids take 4-8 weeks to return to baseline after Winstrol stops, sometimes longer.
How can you tell real Winstrol from fake?
Real stanozolol tablets are typically small, white, hard-pressed, and weigh consistently. Real injectable Winstrol is a water-based suspension that requires shaking before draw and produces injection-site soreness for 24-48 hours due to the suspension particles. Common counterfeits substitute low-dose Anavar (similar texture, no joint pain or lipid crash) or methylated testosterone (different effect profile). Without bloodwork at week 3-4, fake Winstrol can pass undetected through a whole cycle. Our authenticity guide covers verification principles that apply across compounds.
Is Winstrol legal in Canada?
Schedule IV controlled drug under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Prescription required for legitimate medical use – which is essentially nonexistent in modern Canadian medicine for stanozolol. Possession for personal use without prescription is technically illegal but enforcement is low priority. Importation and trafficking carry stronger penalties. WADA-prohibited in all athletic contexts; detection windows on extended urine tests run 60-90 days for oral and 4-6 months for injectable. Health Canada controlled drugs framework.
